What's Knitwear design ?

There are two principle types of fabric, warp and weft, and knitwear.

Warp and weft is the name given to all that is woven on a loom. Once the warp yarn is installed, a shuttle holding the weft yarn is passed either over or under the warp yarns to create a motif or structure out of which clothing pieces will be cut in accordance with the pattern.

Knitwear, for it’s part, uses only one yarn that forms each row by hooking itself on the previous row by an interlaced structure, this renders knitwear elastic and supple.

Knitwear can range from very fine and industrial, being knitted on industrial knitting machines to create items like hosiery, socks, t-shirts,... or thicker for sweaters, cardigans and other articles knit in either in natural fibers (wool, cotton, linen, silk…) or synthetic fibers (viscose, acrylic, technical fibers…), up to thicker hand knitting yarns.

The artisanal technique of crochet is also knitwear, and it uses only one yarn as well.

Out of one yarn, a knitwear designer can therefore create an entire fabric, choosing it’s composition, color, motif, transparency/opacity, texture… the combinations are infinite and extremely creative.

There are many ways to manufacture knitted clothing, either cut out of knitted panels, or programmed to knit each piece's unique shape which is either assembled or has been knit directly into it's finished state.

The technical innovations in this field are fascinating, in as much as its creative approach as for studies of its profitability.

The knitwear fashion design profession in the majority of cases is not taught at school, rather to the benefit of the warp and weft profession, it is therefore extremely qualitative, being built upon precise techniques of which the industry has great need.

In addition, knitwear responds to our contemporary need for confortable and adaptable products, it’s at the same time soft and elegant, loose, cool and modern, and is to be found in all wardrobes.

Therefore it seems logical that more and more creators are interesting themselves in creating knitwear, giving knitwear its nobility (Sonia Rykiel, Rick Owens, Sandra Backlund…)
